Southern Champs - Sailfest - 1 Aug Entry deadline
« on: July 03, 2013, 08:46:16 AM »

I see from the event website that there are 10 entries to date and I know that there are several more 'committed' to coming but have yet to pay.

Can people let me know if they plan to be there for the Friday training day.  Are you signed up for the official training or does anybody want to do our own thing ??

It would be great to know if there are any more coming to the event.

Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian,

I booked in for the organised training on the Friday not thinking there could be phantom focussed training available.

There are 10 phantoms fully entered, 6 registered but not paid their money and another 3 making a decision soon so if everybody turned up it should make for a great event.

The organised training will have video and gps tracking and will spend more time on stuff outside the boat, starts, sailing in waves, the conditions etc than straight line boat speed and technique.  I understand that there may also be a session on how to get the most out of a Tacktick.

There are a few phantoms signed up to the training and a few just going out for a sail, so something for everyone on the Friday.

Anyway, if anybody wants to show their hand and confirm that they are going the organisers would appreciate it so that they can make class arrangements.

Many thanks

Ian

I'm booked up and paid up. For the life of me I can't remember if I signed up to any training though.

From Y&Y
"SailRacer are delighted to announce details of the SailFest coaching day on Friday 23rd August, preceding the GJW Direct SailFest racing from Saturday to Bank Holiday Monday. Raymarine have just confirmed that they will not only be involved on the Friday but also that they will be sponsors of the pursuit race on Monday.

Led by Peter Aitken, former sail- and spar-maker; world champion and highly experienced coach across all levels and classes, the coaching will be aimed at getting the best out of racing at the Olympic Venue. Raymarine will be working alongside Peter demonstrating their Micro Compass; concentrating on optimising performance with this now industry standard small boat digital compass.

On Monday 26th August GJW Direct SailFest will culminate with the Raymarine Long Distance Pursuit Race – although scoring as part of the overall event series, the winner of this race will take home a Raymarine Micro Compass, with other spot prizes throughout the fleet. The Raymarine Team will also be ashore throughout the event to answer any questions relating to the Micro Compass and other products in their range.

But enter now to make sure you get to take part in this prestigious bank holiday event – all entries must be made by 1st August and a limit of 100 boats is to be imposed. Book the training day separately as part of the event entry process.

Bookings are also still being taken for taster sessions in windsurfing, mountain-biking, rock-climbing, sailing and paddlesports to entertain the whole family during the 4 days of the event.

More information on the event website"

Not doing the training on the Friday but will be out in RIB if anyone wants to get a few Phantoms together and do boat on boat training.
If somone has a camera we can shoot some videos of set up etc.

If not will be around Portland Harbour watching etc.

And here is my official line on the training day etc, thanks Ian for passing the info on.  See you there, Brenda

Coaching day, Friday 23rd August, to be led by Peter Aitken (former sail- and spar-maker, world champion sailor and hugely experienced coach) and supported by Raymarine, aiming to get the best out of the venue and the Raymarine Micro Compass.  All boats tracked with full video debrief in conjunction with the tracking data.  £37 for the day per boat.

Loads going on in addition to the racing:

Sat afternoon: Will Mackaness Charity Duathlon - windsurfing and mountain bikes
Sat evening: Hog Roast at WPNSA with DJ afterwards
Sun afternoon: Interclub Watersports Challenge
Sun evening: Meal at RYA Portland House

Raymarine will also be sponsoring the Long Distance Race on Monday with a Raymarine Micro Compass for first place and other prizes within the fleet

And for the whole 4 days there will be sporting taster activities (proper lessons) at a fraction of the usual cost for the rest of the family, or friends who may want to join you for a day or more.  Activities range from 90 minutes to 3 hours with a max charge of just £22. Windsurfing, paddlesports, rock-climbing, mountain-biking and sailing to choose from.  (My 10 year old went from never-sailed to able to sail a windsurfer round by herself after two of these sessions at a previous event - fantastic value!)

The Olympic Sailing Legacy Event - be there.  Dates already announced for 2014 edition as returning on the Bank Holiday weekend next year!
